I don’t know if those are actual German words. Hopefully Google Translate didn’t lead me astray.

Being a native speaker, I would like to chime in regarding the German, if you don't mind:

"Selbstzerstörung" is indeed the correct translation for "self-destruct". Google Translate didn't err here! :-)

"Goldenersäbel" however has the correct meaning, but it should be written in two words ("Goldener Säbel").
Or, if you want it to be a compound word, that would work with "Goldsäbel" ("gold saber") instead.

Thank you! I studied in Germany for three months and know some of the language, but I'm sure my grammar is atrocious. The intersection between different cases and gendered nouns is a bit dizzying.

What determines whether something becomes a compound word or two separate words?

Glad that I could help! :-D

Regarding your question:
Unfortunately I am no grammar expert (I just can tell that what "sounds/reads right" via native speaker's intuition, so take the following with a grain of salt), but I think the word "goldener" can't work in a compound because it has a declension-able adjective ending.
